Give a Day for Buzzards Bay – Clean Up Marsh Island

man cleaning beachWhat better way to celebrate Mother’s Day weekend than by spending a day caring for Mother Earth with Mom? Join us Saturday, May 10 from 9-11 AM as we remove trash along the shoreline at Marsh Island in Fairhaven.

The Coalition for Buzzards Bay is proudly partnering with the Fairhaven-Acushnet Land Preservation Trust (FALPT) and Teva® for this special “Give a Day for Buzzards Bay” clean-up event. Throughout the year, Teva® is partnering with Waterkeeper Alliance members, such as the Coalition, to bring awareness to the region’s local waterways and inspire communities to become involved in efforts to clean them up.

Marsh IslandMarsh Island, which is owned and permanently protected by FALPT and the Coalition, is a 22-acre peninsula jutting into New Bedford Harbor just south of Interstate 195. The island, once a rich coastal habitat with a large salt marsh and tidal creeks, served as a disposal site for dredge spoils in the late 1930s and early 1950s. The dredge spoils filled the island’s wetlands, transforming the property into a peninsula, which is now dominated by low quality upland habitat and invasive vegetation, and its shoreline is often cloaked in marine debris. Along with scheduled clean-up efforts, plans are underway to restore the former salt marsh and tidal creeks, as well as provide public access to the harbor.

Those who participate in this “Give a Day for Buzzards Bay” event will be eligible to receive fabulous raffle prizes provided by Teva®. To sign up, or for additional details, please call Kristin Thoms at 508-999-6363 x207 or e-mail thoms@savebuzzardsbay.org.
