A Strong First Showing for the Watershed Ride

2007 Watershed Ride On Sunday, October 14th, 41 riders set off from Horseneck Beach on The Coalition for Buzzards Bay’s inaugural Watershed Ride spanning the coastal communities of our watershed to Quissett Harbor in Woods Hole.

And what a day it was. The first chill of autumn at Horseneck Beach, through Russells Mills to Padanaram Village and Fort Taber leading to downtown New Bedford. The lengthening day led riders through picturesque Fairhaven to Eastover Farms and the open space of Rochester and Wareham before winding down the shore roads of Bourne and Falmouth to finish line in Quissett.

“I’ve done hundreds of cycling events over the years and this was the most organized, well run first time event I’ve experienced," said Jim LeBelle of Village Cycle in Westport.  “All the most important details were thought out and solutions were completely acceptable.”

Cyclists of all level of abilities raised over $20,000 in support of the Coalition’s research, conservation, and advocacy programs. Fairhaven resident Phillip Whitaker was the top fundraiser, netting $1,510 in sponsorship donations and earning the coveted Watershed Ride Yellow Jersey.

2007 Watershed RideThe Finish Line party at the historic Quissett Harbor House was the perfect setting to stretch out on the lawn. Riders, volunteers, and Coalition staff enjoyed Buzzards Bay ale, fresh apple cider from Keith’s Farm, and music by Neil McCarthy while digging into the tasty barbecue from Smoke & Pickles.

The Coalition thanks the Riders, their sponsors, and the amazing volunteers (and Mother Nature) for a great day and fabulous start to what is sure to become a great autumn tradition in the Buzzards Bay Watershed.
