New Bedford mayor wins national award for green energy and climate protection efforts

New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell received the First Place 2016 Mayors’ Climate Protection Award at this year’s U.S. Conference of Mayors Annual Meeting in Indianapolis. The award recognizes mayors for their energy and climate protection efforts.

New Bedford’s solar and wind energy initiatives have established the city as national leader in green energy and climate protection. More than 16 Megawatts of solar projects have been constructed in the city to provide power for municipal facilities. On a per capita basis, New Bedford has more installed solar capacity than any city in the continental U.S.

The Coalition has been part of New Bedford’s effort to create a greener future for this port city on Buzzards Bay.  Our headquarters, the Buzzards Bay Center, is a model for environmentally responsible design – so much so that it’s featured in the video below!
