If you’re looking for a classic summer beach, Old Silver Beach is a top destination on Buzzards Bay. The beach is divided into two sections: one side for Falmouth residents, and the other side for visitors. Both offer parking, food, and a bath house, so you can spend a full day here having fun in the powdery sand. It can get crowded, so make sure to come early!
One of the best features of Old Silver Beach is the view. On a clear day, you can see straight across the Bay to Marion, Mattapoisett, and West Island. A notable landmark on the horizon is Cleveland Ledge Lighthouse, which marks the shipping channel in Buzzards Bay.
Habitats & Wildlife
The shores of Old Silver Beach are nice and sandy. And if you look closely, you’ll be amazed by the marine life along the water. Search for barnacles and periwinkles on the rock jetties, and watch for silvery fish swimming in the shallow waters.
Old Silver Beach’s two sections sit on either side of a salt marsh along Herring Brook. This stream winds its way toward Buzzards Bay from Wing Pond, and it’s an important habitat for migrating river herring in spring. Take a short walk from the beach to Herring Brook, and you might see egrets, fiddler crabs, and menhaden in this salt marsh habitat.
