New Bedford Science Cafe: Down on a Watery Farm
This event happened in the past.New Bedford, MA 02740
Join New Bedford Science Cafe and their guest Seth Garfield, aquaculturist and co-founder of Cuttyhunk Shellfish Farms and a member of the Buzzards Bay Coalition Leadership Council, for his talk “Down on a watery farm: lessons learned by a local shell-fisher and the hurdles that lie ahead.”
Seth and Dorothy Garfield began one of New England’s first off-bottom oyster farms 37 years ago, Cuttyhunk Shellfish Farms, which today offers up the Cuttyhunk Oyster. Seth will discuss how the operation has evolved to keep pace with environmental changes, consumer demands, new business practices and governmental regulations, according to a news release. He’ll shed light on the day-to-day chores of growing oysters in cages raised a foot or so off the bottom over the course of four New England seasons, and how this model differs from floating or intertidal models.
Plus, he’ll provide tips about where to find the area’s freshest and tastiest oysters!
