Join Coalition staff at the Horseneck Point Life-Saving Station to get a first look at our new exhibits, participate in guided beach exploration activities, see a special presentation of historical photos of Gooseberry Island by local photographer Greg Stone, and learn about the history of the life-saving service in Westport.

Built in 1888, the life-saving station was once part of a network of nearly 70 sites along the Massachusetts coast. Today, it is one of four remaining. The station and learning center, which has been closed due to the COVID pandemic, has recently undergone some improvements and resumed welcoming visitors on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturdays from 12 to 4 p.m.

The center features a new exhibition on the Atlantic striped bass fishery, the threats that it faces, and the leadership of the late Jack Reynolds and other members of the Westport Fishermen’s Association in advocating for conservation of the Bay.

Visitors also will find hands-on activities, from Bay Adventure backpacks equipped with the tools to explore the shore at nearby Gooseberry Island as well as a coastal touch tank populated with sea stars, hermit crabs, whelks, and bay scallops.
