Meet Tony Williams: Running for a Cleaner Buzzards Bay

We are days away from the ASICS Falmouth Road Race, and Team Buzzards Bay is gearing up to make every mile count for our Bay. One of our standout team members, Tony Williams, Director of Monitoring Programs, has been a dedicated part of the Buzzards Bay Coalition since the summer of 1996 when he joined our staff. With over five years of running the Falmouth Road Race with Team Buzzards Bay, Tony’s commitment to both the race and the Coalition’s mission is truly inspiring.

We sat down with Tony to get his perspective on this iconic road race, fundraising, and the Coalition. Read on for this interview as well as how you can donate and support Team Buzzards Bay in the 52nd running of the ASICS Falmouth Road Race.

Q: When did you start working for the Buzzards Bay Coalition?

Tony: The summer of 1996.

Q: How many years have you run the Falmouth Road Race with Team Buzzards Bay, and what inspired you to join the team?

Tony: I’ve lost count, but it’s been over five years. I have been running my whole life.  After early mornings of Baywatcher water monitoring and working with volunteers, you’ll often find me running the back roads of Rochester after work.  Running in the Falmouth Road Race and raising funds to support the many programs here at the Coalition is just another way I contribute to keeping our Bay clean and enjoyable for everyone.

Q: How have you been preparing for the Falmouth Road Race? Any specific training routines or tips?

Tony: Just get a pair of new running sneakers and start running. The hardest part is just getting yourself out the door. Be like Forrest Gump….

Q: Can you share a memorable moment or experience from your time with Team Buzzards Bay?

Tony: One of my favorite memories is the camaraderie at the starting line. There’s this incredible energy as the team gathers, knowing that we’re all running for the same cause.

Q: What do you hope to achieve by participating in this race?

Tony: My main goal is to raise awareness and funds for the Coalition’s work. Every dollar helps us continue our efforts to protect and restore the Bay. I also hope to inspire others to get involved, whether it’s through running, volunteering, or donating.

Q: What specific projects or initiatives of the Coalition are you most proud of?

Tony: I’m particularly proud of our Baywatchers Water Monitoring Program. Over the last 32 years we have had more than 1,000 volunteers help monitor the health of Buzzards Bay and its harbors, coves, and rivers. The data we collect is crucial for understanding the Bay’s health and improving it.

Q: How can others support Team Buzzards Bay and the Buzzards Bay Coalition’s efforts?

Tony: Feel free to donate to my fundraising page. Any bit of support helps us work to keep all types of pollution out of the Bay.

Q: What message do you have for people who are considering getting involved with the Buzzards Bay Coalition?

Tony: Volunteer to do something with us! We have all sorts of activities where volunteers are a big help, from water monitoring as a Baywatcher, to trail maintenance for people to enjoy our properties, and even helping with our other big events the Bay Swim and the Watershed Bike Ride. You can find out more information here.

Q: Can you share any success stories or positive impacts you’ve seen from the Coalition’s work in improving water quality in Buzzards Bay?

Tony: We’ve seen significant improvements in water quality in certain areas thanks to our restoration projects and conservation efforts. One success has been the reduction of nitrogen pollution in areas where we’ve worked closely with local towns to implement better wastewater management practices. Seeing the clear waters and thriving marine life returning to these areas is such a rewarding feeling and really shows that our work is making a difference.

As Tony and Team Buzzards Bay lace up for the Falmouth Road Race, they’re not just running for the finish line—they’re running for the future of Buzzards Bay. With the race just around the corner, now is the perfect time to show your support. Donate to Tony’s race, the team, cheer on the team, or even join us next year.
