Buzzards Bay Watershed RIDE(r) Profile: DREW DIMMICK

As we gear-up for our 18th annual Buzzards Bay Coalition Watershed RIDE on October 6th, we asked 16-year veteran rider and former BBC Board member Drew Dimmick for his thoughts on the ride and what it means to him.

Q: How did you get involved with Buzzards Bay Coalition?

Drew: In 2009 I did my first Watershed Ride, which introduced me to the Coalition.

Q: What inspired you to participate in the Watershed Ride, and what keeps you coming back?

Drew: Way back in 2009, I liked the mission of the Coalition and needed to have a reason to get out and ride.

When I ride, I think about all the milestones that the Coalition has achieved since I first rode in 2009 – and it’s simply overwhelming – I love that my small effort to raise funds for the Coalition helps support all the good work the team does – from water quality to youth programs as well as supporting research into our fragile ecosystem.

Q: How have you been training for the ride?

Drew: I ride the Shining Sea bikeway end-end every week while visiting friends in Cataumet. I also do Power Zone training on my Peloton when the weather doesn’t cooperate.

Q: What do you most look forward to during the ride?

Drew: Gathering with my team the night before the ride for a big carb-load, then the gorgeous scenery of the 75-mile route, and then a cold beer at the finish overlooking Eel Pond.

Q: Do you have any tips for new riders?

Drew: It’s not a race – keep a reasonable pace, and don’t lallygag at the break stops – be businesslike, do what you need to do and keep moving.

Q: What message do you have for riders considering signing up for the first time?

If you can, drive the route (minus the rail trail portions, of course) to get an idea of what you’re going to do.

As Drew and hundreds of other cyclists prepare for the Watershed RIDE, they’re not just biking for the finish line—they’re helping to protect the future of Buzzards Bay. With the RIDE just around the corner, now is the perfect time to show your support. Donate to Drew’s ride, register to ride, or volunteer with us on October 6th.
