Victory for clean water in Wareham: Board of Health passes new nitrogen reduction regulations

The Coalition applauds the Wareham Board of Health for its recent passage of a new septic system regulation that will reduce nitrogen from new construction within 500 feet of the town’s waterways. This regulation is an important step forward in preventing Wareham’s nitrogen pollution problem from getting worse.

Wareham’s new septic system regulation will:

  • Prevent new septic systems from being installed within 150 feet of waterways.
  • Require nitrogen-reducing septic systems for any new construction, upgrades, or failed systems between 150 and 500 feet of waterways and wetlands.

With grant funding from the Massachusetts Environmental Trust, the Coalition will support the Wareham Board of Health as it sets up a system to track compliance with this new regulation.
