The Knubble

At the entrance to Westport Harbor lies The Knubble, a barrier beach and tall rocky outcropping that protects the Westport River inlet. With quiet, sandy shores and outstanding views of Buzzards Bay, this area is a unique destination for Westport residents to enjoy.

Features

a view of boats on the Westport River from the Knubble

Walk along the rocky shores at The Knubble to explore clear waters and stunning views of Buzzards Bay and the Westport River inlet.

Known locally as the “Point of Rocks,” The Knubble in Westport get its name from the towering nub of exposed granite bedrock that sits at the entrance to the Westport River inlet. It’s a hidden gem for Westport residents. The Westport Land Conservation Trust manages much of the beach here, which is also accessible to visitors.

The beach leads out to the dramatic Point of Rocks, which welcomes visitors to climb and explore these rocky shores. From up here, the panoramic water view is phenomenal. Gaze up the Westport River, where sailboats bob and kayakers paddle past Canoe Rock. Across the inlet, the shores of Cherry & Webb Beach, Horseneck Beach State Reservation, and Gooseberry Island stretch along the coastline, leading to the open waters of Buzzards Bay.

Habitats & Wildlife

The Knubble is a barrier beach that protects the Westport River inlet. It’s a special, sensitive habitat — the fragile beach and dunes are vulnerable to erosion from coastal storms. As sea level continues to rise, this erosion problem is growing worse. The Buzzards Bay Coalition has been working to support the town of Westport to restore the beach dunes and provide environmentally responsible access for all Westport residents.
