Why do we have a February 29th this year? The answer is in the stars! Join amateur astronomer Jim Kundzicz for a night sky viewing and educational talk at Wildlands Trust on Leap Day, 2020.

Begin indoors in the Community Conservation Barn to learn about the night sky, how it changes throughout the year based on Earth’s movement, and why this means we have a leap year every four years. Then head outside around sunset to get started with the night sky viewing. The large field provides a rare opportunity for big sky at night, right here in Plymouth. The Barn will remain open throughout the night for a place to warm up and grab some hot chocolate.

As the sun sets, Venus will rise. Have fun trying to find it as it first appears in the night sky. During this time, we’ll also look at the craters on the moon using Jim’s high powered telescopes. As it gets darker, we’ll look at and learn about the winter constellations, the Pleiades (Seven Sisters) Star Cluster, and of course, Polaris, the North Star and the center of the night sky!
