Volunteer of the year Joe Collins dedicates his time to Coalition’s mission
For Joe Collins of Westport, volunteering with the Coalition is a great way to support improvements to Buzzards Bay. Because of his dedication and commitment, Joe was honored as volunteer of the year at the Coalition’s annual meeting this summer.
Joe began volunteering with the Coalition seven years ago at the first Buzzards Bay Watershed Ride. “Once I got involved, I realized this was a great organization to protect the environment, and I wanted to invest my time here,” he says.
Now Joe volunteers frequently with the Coalition. He serves as a docent on Friday mornings in the Richard C. Wheeler Bay Learning Center in New Bedford and assists at events throughout the year. “I find it interesting to learn about all the things the Coalition does” and to share that information with people who visit the Learning Center, Joe says.
But when asked about his favorite volunteer activity, Joe says it’s still the Watershed Ride, the event where he began his involvement with the Coalition. It’s the one time each year that Joe spends a day driving around the entire Bay, from his home in Westport all the way to Quissett Harbor.
The Coalition depends on volunteers like Joe to help run events, educate the public, and more. If you are interested in volunteering with the Coalition, visit our volunteer page to find out how you can get involved.
