Why I Swim: Mel Dyer

Mel Dyer, Reference & Outreach Librarian at the Wareham Free Library, has been a frequent participant in the Buzzards Bay Swim. These are her reasons for why she swims in the annual fundraiser for the Buzzards Bay Coalition:

It’s good for me and even better for our community!  An avid swimmer and current Wareham “washashore,” I was fortunate to grow up spending summers visiting the beach. The water was always the highlight of summertime – every daylight hour spent on or near the water. After a move West, and 27 years spent hiking, biking, and enjoying Colorado, the ocean called me back and the Coalition was here making sure that the experience was better than ever! Not only do we have the BBC to thank for clean water, but for preserving/conserving remarkable historic sites, coastal habitats, scenic hiking trails, and other wonderful outdoor experiences. I can’t rave enough about the staff and volunteers that make up this organization and the quality of the programming. The BBC offers educational opportunities for all ages that are not only informational, but FUN – so important in the learning process. The BBC swim has become an integral part of my summer experiences, and I hope it becomes an enjoyable lifelong adventure for others as well.
