Restoring the Agawam River

Efforts are currently underway to improve fish passage, cold-water fish habitat, and wetlands along the mainstem of the Upper Agawam River.  Restoration of the Agawam River follows the retirement of approximately 70 acres of cranberry bogs formerly owned by A.D. Makepeace.  The Coalition acquired the bogs and surrounding land along the river in December 2025.  A portion of those cranberry bogs will continue to be farmed for up to another two years while restoration planning is underway.   With funding from NOAA, MA Division of Ecological Restoration, and the Buzzards Bay National Estuary Program, the Coalition together with the Town of Plymouth is working with an engineering firm on developing detailed plans for the improved site.  The restored habitats will continue to include a network of trails for recreational access. Click on the links below to learn more:
