Crocs make for nice water shoes on the beach and in shallow water. But in a pinch, a camper can slip one off and they make a great temporary habitat for a cast of busy hermit crabs.
Summer camps are off to a lively start at the Onset Bay Center, with another full season of kids getting outside to explore Buzzards Bay through hands-on adventure. Campers spend their days sailing, kayaking, paddleboarding, swimming, fishing, crabbing, and discovering the wildlife and ecology of the bay.
This year, we’ve introduced several exciting additions to our programs. Bay Explorers now includes swimming lessons led by qualified American Red Cross water safety instructors, giving campers the opportunity to build confidence and develop lifelong swimming skills while enjoying time on the water.
We’ve also added a fleet of smaller kayaks designed specifically for our younger campers. The better fit means they can paddle more efficiently and independently, helping them experience success earlier and build confidence on the water.
Another exciting addition this summer is our new half-day Young Explorers program for 6- and 7-year-olds. The program provides younger children with an age-appropriate introduction to outdoor exploration, allowing them to experience the bay through games, discovery, and water-based activities while building the confidence and skills to move into our full-day programs in future summers.
It’s been great to see campers spending their summer getting muddy, sandy, wet, and connected to Buzzards Bay. Our goal continues to be giving every child the opportunity to build confidence outdoors, develop new skills, and create lasting memories while fostering a lifelong connection to the Bay.
