Preserving a Legacy

"My great grandfather was a courageous whaler who left his Cape Verde family in Cape Verde to make a better life for them.   On one of his many voyages around the world, while his ship was docked at an area port, he walked to Rochester. He liked what he saw and in 1898 he purchased land in Rochester. In 1902, following a harrowing voyage on the 'Notice', my great grandfather returned to Rochester with his wife and two daughters to make a new life.

Our family still occupies land that he and his sons and daughters purchased over 100 years ago. From our homes we look out over 100 acres of open space, Atlantic White Cedar Swamp and watershed.

I learned about the great work that the Buzzards Bay Coalition has been doing for areas that we as a family have been fortunate to live around all our lives. I wanted to be part of this good work to preserve what my ancestors saw as beauty more than 100 years ago."
